Custom Made Club in the Hole
Category: Hotel, RestaurantOrdered at the Terra Cafe in the lobby of the Terra Hotel in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
There was not one club sandwich in all of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. So many sports, no clubs; I was disappointed and hungry. The flight from St. Paul MN to Dallas TX to Jackson WY starting at 4:30am didn’t leave me in the best state. At least we were upgraded on the first flight (thanks to my status). The day before had been a solid disaster and all I wanted was some satisfaction in Jackson.
We were staying at the Terra Hotel, which I loved. This wasn’t my first stay here, although normally our visits take place during the winter. Summer was here and thanks to no ski boots, it was easy to walk around and explore Jackson Hole… but still, no club sandwich.
What to do what to do. I needed a club sandwich, and I needed one bad.
I walked into the Terra Cafe and perused the menu. No club, but they had a sandwich with all of the right ingredients called The Drift. So I asked it.
“Can you guys make me a club sandwich?”
“Well we have The Drift. We could put ham in that if you want.”
Ham? Ah yes, the always fun question of “what comes in a club sandwich” lingered in the air. We stared at each other.
“How about you just cut it into quarters and call it a club?”
“Sounds great!” the person behind the bar replied, and relief washed over me as I waited patiently for my club, knowing the ingredients were just what the doctor ordered… if there was a sandwich doctor, that is.
Oven roasted turkey, applewood bacon, organic baby swiss, wyomato (oh yes – locally grown), and organic mixed greens, all served on a wholegrain ciabatta lightly topped with a basil infused aioli. What a lineup! And I had never tried wyomato before – a great treat to add to this custom made creation. Banana on the side, my mouth and stomach were ready, screaming “let’s do this!” as I unwrapped the take-out food on my balcony overlooking a beautiful Jackson Wyoming. The royal we was ready to dine.
Turkey and bacon oh my! You had to love the meat of this sandwich. Perfectly sliced turkey breast, lightly folded on top of itsself with a nice fluffiness to it, complimented by a thick cut well done bacon that oozed with deliciousness on each bite. I’ll be honest, during my trip to Wyoming I was expecting a lot out of every dish with meat in it, and this one was no different; I was glad it delivered.
The wyomato was just a delicious tomato, but it added something fun to this club. It played well with the organic mixed greens; you could taste the freshness of both ingredients. The wholegrain ciabatta was a delicious, hearty bread and the basil aioli was lightly spread on both ends, adding a nice touch of moisture and flavor.
There was only one downside to this club sandwich: the baby swiss acted more like macho man swiss. It dominated the sandwich and every bite had a cut of strong swiss cheese flavor. It became entirely unnecessary, and after only a few bites I took it out of the sandwich and enjoyed this club without a baby in site.
Thank you Terra Hotel for satisfying my needs. Over the next 24 hours we had whitewater rafting, possibly mountain biking, and definitely a wedding, but with the Draft Club in me, nothing could slow me down.
