It was 11am when I booked my flight to Frankfurt that same day. The friend I was meeting assured me it would be a fun trip, and with my flight departing at 5pm, I had little time to shower, pack, and get to the airport for the 2 night trip.
2019 was my most traveled year, so it only seemed fitting that I would fly close to 6,000 miles each way for 2 days of fun in Germany with a childhood friend of mine.
We chose the Westin Grand Hotel because they accepted SPG points and was perfectly located in the center of the city. And after a myriad of crappy airplane meals and several heavy Germany dinners/lunches, I needing something appeasing in a way that only the Club Sandwich could deliver.
The front desk agent swore it would arrive in under 20 minutes, and I told him I’d only order it if that was the case. And so I waited patiently while I packed for the return flight home, excited to get a meal in that wasn’t schnitzel, sausage, or something previously frozen on a plane.
Solid and hearty, the Westin Grand’s Club Sandwich was everything I was looking for in the moment.
The trio of proteins, including the thick bacon, fried egg, and chunky chicken, added flavor and texture to the meal, while the tomato and lettuce added further bite and moisture I couldn’t help but enjoy. The club’s downfall, however, was it’s ratio-ing of said proteins: the bacon was there in a layers and the egg was only found in the center. This meant I enjoyed many of the first bites, but with the white bread overpowering the remaining bites, I decided I’d rather fill up on the fries than finish the club sandwich. The best part of the club, however, were the cucumbers that smacked me in the face with a clear and crisp deliciousness; great touch!
With all of that said, in the moment, I couldn’t help but wish the Westin made their club sandwich with schnitzel; it would have been a perfect addition to a club sandwich in Germany.
A fantastic trip, and my last of 2018, I was eager to get home to my loving wife, and relax back in Los Angeles, as we both anticipated a quite exciting 2019…
