Vegetarian Strikes Again
Category: Airport, CafeOrdered at Real Food Daily at LAX's Terminal 4 in Los Angeles.
Right before flying back to LA from Boston, I found out my grandmother passed away in Florida. Upon landing in LA, I found out her funeral was in New York City three days later. And so I booked a flight back to the east coast, to meet up with my family for the 24 hour period.
Another six hour flight on American Airlines from LAX Terminal 4, I knew exactly what I was getting to eat before boarding my flight to JFK
Unfortunately, my favorite tofu veggie wrap appeared to be sold out upon arrival at Real Food Daily. A sandwich Rachel introduced me to many years ago that I’ve consumed more than a dozen times, was nonexistent today… But they did have a vegetarian club sandwich. And how could I say no to that?
I was thrilled to be flying American Airlines’s 3 class 321T – it’s a huge upgrade from all other domestic planes. They actually serve quasi meal snacks on board for economy, which while kind, didn’t really fill me up or offer the selection I was craving.
So as 9am PST rolled along, I became hungry, mainly thanks to my 430am breakfast, so I dove right into my vegetarian club sandwich wrap.
I was pleasantly shocked to find a mix of delicious, well balanced and healthy ingredients. While the tempeh lacked crispiness and the bacon obviously didn’t taste like bacon and thus was drowned out in everything else (why they call it tofu bacon I have no idea), this was an overall good execution of a vegetarian club sandwich.
I almost didn’t mind the excessive salt and unnecessarily large whole wheat wrap that was enough for literally several sandwiches. Unfortunately, the holdability suffered towards the end, and I had to use several napkins to keep myself clean.
As I sat back and savored the moment, I couldn’t help but think this was an item that they should sell on planes. Real Food Daily strikes again as a solid meal choice at LAX Terminal 4. I’ve had many club sandwiches at airports in my life, but this one just might be first in line for takeoff…
