The recommendations started to flood in. Living in Brookline/Newton and working from home, I needed lunchtime spots that served delicious club sandwiches. Fortunately, LinkedIn and Facebook proved valuable tools in soliciting opinions, and very quickly a list was made.

But working from home doesn’t necessarily mean more free time – in fact, it can be the opposite. Encumbered by emails and meetings, I went to the list of recommendations and chose the location nearest to me on Grubhub: Busy Bee in Brookline.

A Brookline staple that’s been around for over 50 years, gleaming 300+ reviews and 4.5 stars, it felt hard to go wrong selecting Busy Bee for a club sandwich. In fact, Busy Bee had a menu dedicated to club sandwiches – which caused slight analysis paralysis during my decision making process. Hamburger, cheeseburger, sliced ham, sliced turkey, tuna salad, chicken, salad, egg salad, and roast beef club sandwiches…

Grubhub had photos of the sliced turkey club – looked hearty and delicious – so I decided to go with that option, knowing if Busy Bee delivered, I’d have other options to take advantage of in the near future.

At just over $10, I thought there was decent value to the club sandwich – although with Grubhub’s fees, it turned into a more expensive order ($18!), and the 30 minute extra delay due to the driver delivering other orders reinforced the idea I would need to go out next time I wanted a club sandwich.

Even with the massive delay, the club sandwich arrived warm – gotta love that.

Sizeable amount of layered ingredients, Busy Bee’s Turkey Club Sandwich definitely deserved the middle slice. The toothpick assisted with the first bit down, but the holdability ended up being a challenge as the slightly excessive mayo washing into my mouth and hands.

Turkey was nice and thick with decent flavor and moisture, while the bacon, even under all that mayonnaise for 45 minutes, was still crispy… although one corner lacked the pork entirely. The extra layers of lettuce added a nice crunch factor, and the tomato delivered a creamy moisture that reiterated how unnecessary the extra mayo was on all 3 slices of bread.

French fries on the side were nice and well done, although did suffer from the elongated delivery route to my house – another sign that Grubhub was not my future lunchtime goto.

Overall I was happy with the order and the meal. But the mayo left a little too much mayo wash over the club sandwich. Would I order from them again? Probably, I’ll be working from home for a while potentially – although time will tell, as there are too many other club sandwiches to try.
