We booked Wequassett during their Cyber Monday sale of 2023 at rates of 50% off. And as luck would have it, 8 months later, we were still available for the dates we booked, and we stayed at this amazing property for the weekend.

What a wonderful experience. A fantastic family-friendly property that truly catered to our needs… while we wont be back, we mainly attribute that sentiment to the fact there’s just so much to explore on Cape Cod, and this review is about that: exploration, and not Wequassett.

Wequassett did not have a club sandwich, so the property will not be added to my website, however, so much of The Cape is truly about leaving home base and venturing off to small locations that cater to locals and tourists alike.

On our last day we left our friends from the weekend in Chatham and ventured off to Paine’s Creek Beach, where our other friends were enjoying the afternoon. We soaked up the sun, waded through the waters looking for crabs, and generally enjoyed this world-class kid-friendly beach, a must visit with the young ones on any Cape vacation.

As we left it was nearly 2pm and a 2+ hour drive home, so food was on the agenda before we departed and kids napped. An abnormally late lunch for us, we chose the first establishment we saw: Kate’s Seafood in Brewster.

An unassuming clearly loved by locals pitstop, Kate boasted great fish and classic ice cream flavors. Our kids wanted burgers, Rachel wanted the fish and chips, and I opted for one of their specials: The Captain’s Club Sandwich!

Who knew what that could be – no ingredients on the menu, and we didn’t ask any questions, we just waited the 20 minutes for our food to be done and our kids to be fed.

Instead of two hamburgers, we got two hot dogs, one with a single slice of American cheese on it (hilarious!) but our kids seemed to deal with this change and we soldiered on through lunch. My Captain’s Club – it delivered uniqueness, that is for sure.

Absolutely delightful, meaty, flaky, and oh so tender cod, lightly fried in a savory, peppery batter, this captain’s cod was outstanding. A+ use of this protein. I loved every bite of this main ingredient.

The bacon, absolutely dreadful. How could an establishment that used such high quality fish use such low quality bacon? I mean, the bacon was hands down disgusting. No flavor, no crispness, fast-food thin without any crinkles to add it volumes. What was up with that? Even in the photo above you can see it has this weird opaque color to it that made it nearly camouflage with the thin layer of cheese. The fish was a 10/10, the bacon nearly a 0, a hard protein category to rate.

The tomato was lovely, I was surprised there was no sauce (although the squeeze of lemon did help!), and the bun added little value but didn’t detract.

I did enjoy the massive heaping pile of sweet potato fries, and I gobbled up the fried cod and tomato, and I couldn’t help but think with just a few tweaks, this could be a stellar club sandwich…. But until then…Kate’s Seafood
