“Where should we go for lunch?” Jonathan asked me via text. I was getting used to this game: people being nice by asking me where I want to go, only for me to tell them I’m new to the city and they should make the suggestion… “29 Newbury is always easy and good” said Jonathan. Alright then, let’s do it.
To be honest, I had never been to 29 Newbury for lunch and the last time I was there was for a photo exhibit on my Australian photos, at least 2-3 years ago. I knew it was a popular back bay spot that had been around for quite some time, but as far as their food went, I had no idea what their menu held in store.
As I glanced up and down the menu wondering what to order, the lobster roll tempted me. Yes I will have that… but wait… what do I see here? A self-branded “29 Club” sandwich? Pass on the lobster roll, I will try this club sandwich, Arnold Palmer on the side.
Roasted turkey, bacon, cheddar, lettuce, and tomato served on a marbled rye (or as a flour tortilla wrap – although I went with the rye); I was enjoying conversation with Jonathan, Sam (who happened to pop bye) and their newly imported friend Chance, but my mind couldn’t get away from the 29 Club.
I was expecting something traditional. Something you could really enjoy and enter into your weekly lunch repertoire if your office was in the area. Something that made me say “Ahh – not that’s a great classic club!”
And that’s exactly what happened.
The 29 Club arrived with gusto and flair and made a grand entrance next to the bacon cheese burger. Wearing a gorgeous marbled rye, this club was sure to stand out on any table. I was taken aback in excitement as I noticed the perfect layering, a ratio any sandwich enthusiast would appreciate. Before I even bit into the 29 Club, I knew I was going to enjoy every mouthful of this sandwich.
A symphony of ingredients played together as I munched on the 29 Club. The marbled rye, perfectly quartered, added great flavor and stability to each bite. The turkey was your typical sliced sandwich meet, while the bacon was nice and crispy. The tomato and lettuce were both fresh and combined with the bacon and cheddar cheese, I think these 4 exact ingredients all came on the burger Jonathan ordered as well.
The 29 Club came with the standard French fry dump on top, a presentation I am more than familiar with but always disappointed to see; there are better ways to serve fries in my opinion, but it seems to become a universally accepted practice to dump them all over the sandwich. Shame on the universe.
With a great outdoor patio, 29 Newbury was the perfect place for lunch and I’m glad Jonathan recommended it . The 29 Club hit the spot and while I may opt for something else on this menu next time I dine here, I will always remember this classic club for hitting all of the right spots and really satisfying my lunchtime comfort craving.
